Martilyo Gang Robbery in SM Megamall

As of 7:40PM tonight, members of "Martilyo Gang" were involved in a robbery inside SM Megamall.

According to the Mandaluyong Police, shots were fired which resulted in chaos and stampede, allowing the suspects to escape towards Julia Vargas area.

The style of Martilyo gang is to use a hammer to break the glass encasement their target establishments, particularly jewelry shops. They would then use the people as their cover to get away from the scene. They usually fire their guns to create commotion and chaos, making their escape much easier.

Interestingly, a 150-day gun ban is in effect, ending in June 12.

November last year, they were also involved in a jewelry store robbery in Dagupan using this similar tactic. Using a hammer, they attacked the jewelry store on a Saturday morning. The seven suspects fired shots at the police upon their escape using motorcycles.

In 2011, five members of the group were arrested inside their hideout in Maharlika Village in Taguig. The arrest was made a few days after they robbed two jewelry shops in Sta Cruz. Here's the interesting part: one of the five nabbed suspects was a security guard, stationed at National Food Authority in Taguig City.

Robberies such as this, happening inside a mall, is a wake-up call for the management and the police. The public safety should be seriously considered. The security guards are examining the bags and inspects the wave of people going inside their malls, how can they explain why the robbers were able to bring in guns in the first place?

Meanwhile, always be on alert when in a public place. Even though armed robberies are rare, petty theft and holdups are much more common. If you see anything suspicious, don't hesitate to report it to the nearest security guard/police. Be on guard, especially during paydays, when criminals are most likely to rob.

Car Review: Should I Buy Suzuki Vitara JLX?

Perhaps you're in the market and looking for a second hand vehicle. You're still undecided whether you'll get a car, an SUV, or a pick-up truck. You want a dependable, rugged vehicle that isn't too boxy. You need a vehicle that can take you to places.

Guess what, there's a vehicle that can do all of that, and more!

If you're looking for a second-hand car, consider looking into the  Suzuki JLX Vitara. I will enumerate some of the strong points of  this very capable vehicle, and then you can decide if this will fit your needs.

Why You Should Consider Buying Suzuki JLX Vitara

1. High Ground Clearance
Ground clearance for stock vitara is about 8 inches, higher than Toyota Avanza and Rav4. The ground clearance is also high enough to allow easy access when entering or leaving the vehicle.

How To Fix Noisy Speedometer

The speedometer of my Suzuki Vitara JLX is somewhat faulty, with the needle jumping up and down instead of the usual smooth movement. Along with this, the gauge in the instrument panel is making this "quack quack " noise. At first, I never bothered to have it fixed since the noise is not that audible when driving in daytime (when traffic noise is much higher than the speedometer noise). However, the noise is very much apparent during nighttime driving -- enough to drive me nuts especially when the radio is off to drown the annoying sound.

Thus, I decided to have this fixed. I simply had enough. I want my peaceful nighttime driving back.

Upon googling, I haven't seen a straight walkthrough on DIY replacement of speedometer cable for the Vitara. This is gonna be harder than I thought, so I'm writing this as a guide for those who need to repair their noisy speedometer by changing the speedo cable.

Materials List

  • Speedometer Cable
  • WD-40 (or any other penetrating lubricant)
  • Screwdrivers (both flat and philips head)
  • Flashlight (I recommend high intensity LED flashlights)
  • Matting (you'll need this when you go under the vehicle)

I ordered the original speedometer cable (SGP Part Number 34910-60A41) from my trusty Suzuki parts dealer. I could have opted for the cheaper version but the price difference is negligible. The speedometer cable is pre-lubricated and had a rubber grommet (for mounting on the firewall).

Procedure

1. Remove the Steering Wheel

The steering wheel must be removed so that you'll have enough room to remove the instrument panel later.
