The Curious Case of Odesk Job Postings

While browsing around oDesk, I saw a job posting that aroused my curiosity  The job description was vague, although the position had the word "analyst" in it. I checked the profile of the employer and it seems it is a newly-created account; no feedback but with a bundle of job postings.

Giving the employer the benefit of the doubt, I applied for the job listed and sent a formal cover letter along with my application. Here's the reply I got from them:

Hi Mark,
Thank you so much for responding to our add on gumtree. We really appreciate it.
We had so many responses we can't possibly respond to them all. Please answer these 5 simple questions so we can schedule an interview.

1. Can you handle several important tasks that needed to be done in a certain time frame? How good are you at multi-tasking? Give me an example of a challenging situation in the workplace and what you did to fix it.
2. What are your top 5 strengths that you are most proud of?
3. What would you consider to be your worst quality and why? This is vital information because we would also want to provide the necessary training if appropriate.
4. Do you consider yourself a people-person - someone who provides exceptional customer support and satisfaction in order to strengthen my business? As you know my company’s goal is helping people and I would like to find a staff that has the same passion.
5. Write a small paragraph as to why I should select and interview you to be my right hand person. Why is this job a good fit for you?
Thank you for your response, and I look forward to reviewing your answers.
Please respond ASAP to be considered for this position.
Regards,

Well, well. Something's fishy. First, what's gumtree? With a quick Google search, I found out that Gumtree is a website for classified ads, perhaps some sort of Craigslist. Clearly, the person who copy-pasted the standard reply message missed this small error.

Ok, perhaps that's just an honest mistake. Perhaps the person who responded is too weary to function properly, or some other reason. However, the questions they're asking seems a bit "generalized", as to say. Nothing indicated in particular except that their goal is "helping people" and they needed "someone who provides exceptional customer support and satisfaction". A call center job? Helpdesk? L1 support?

The funny thing is, in question #5, it indicated that they needed someone to be the "right hand person". Virtual assistant. perhaps?

I got lost with the final question, "Why is this job a good fit for you?" Given that the job posting did not include specific job description nor skills required, it would be hard for me to answer this question. How will I know if I'm qualified for the job if I don't have any idea what the job entails?

Even though I'm no longer interested, I sent another message asking for clarification regarding the issue, and to inform them of the typo. Below is my message:

Hello ,
You posted the "ad" on oDesk, not in Gumtree.
Before we proceed, can you tell me the qualifications for that position? I would also like to know what kind of business your company is involved with.
Thank you and have a great day.

I still haven't heard from them, one whole month and counting. Bogus. I checked the profile again and I was surprised to see there are 44 applicants for that posted job. Job posted by an unverified account, with no hires and no amount spent.

So, to all freelancers out there. Always conduct background check for your potential employers. If the job posting is vague or hazy, most probably it's going to be a waste of time. If the offer is too good to be true, it probably is.

How To Fix Overheating Laptop

My old Asus laptop starts to shut down and I noticed the keyboard is a bit hotter than usual. Good thing, laptops tend to shut down whenever they reach some temperature threshold, preventing further meltdown of components. The bad side, I lose everything I'm working on whenever the laptop shuts down.

This overheating anomaly is becoming a regular occurrence, making me lose my work. Thankfully, I developed the habit of saving frequently, making the loss minimal. However, the time lost due to restarting is a great productivity killer. I need to find a solution to this laptop overheating problem as soon as possible.

Never Miss An Important Email From Multiple Gmail accounts

Gmail Logo
Gmail - with 10GB of free email storage
I have a lot of emails that I need to regularly check and this daily ritual of email checking can eat up a lot of time. If you have more than one Gmail account and you have a hard time checking everything, here are some tips to make sure you don't miss any important email sent to you. This will lessen the time you spend logging in from multiple email accounts.

1. Use Autoforwarding

Forward emails from your secondary email accounts to your primary email. This way, any email you receive will show up in your primary account.

2. Delegate control in Gmail

Delagating control used to be available only for Google Apps for business accounts, but now they have extended this feature to all products. Email delegation is particularly useful for checking and sending emails on your second account using your primary account -- no logging out needed.
To enable email delegation in your Gmail account, follow this how-to:

Using CAT for concatenating files broken down via HJSplit

My friend Bu wanted to share with me a large 3GP file. However, attaching large files in email is limited (20MB or so in Gmail), so we needed to split the files. I have been using WinRAR to split files, but he is using HJSplit.

Oh, and I'm on Ubuntu.

I tried to look for an HJSplit equivalent for ubuntu, but I can't find anything useful. Somewhere, I've read that if the files are not compressed when split, you can use CAT to recombine them.

Here is the syntax:

Piggyback

I was able to find an unsecured wifi signal within the vicinity of my room. Yeah!

speedtest.net result - wifi
speedtest.net result

The connection is using BayanDSL. It isn't as fast as what I have in the office or my previous DSL connection, but it's a lot better than dial up, and definitely better than nothing.

Looking for the sweet spot was really hard. Signals fluctuate and I even tried different orientation of the netbook I'm using just to get a decent signal. A few inch of difference in location could make the signal intermittent. Ping reply of DNS server jumped from three digits to two digits. Now its stable at 15-50ms.

Since this is not mine, I'm going to impose a few rules upon myself for piggybacking.

1. Connect only when needed.
2. Don't hog the bandwidth. Never download anything large.
3. If the wifi router is accessible, don't change the settings.

Cheers!

How to Copy an Existing MySQL Table Into a New Table

Sometimes you might need to duplicate a table for testing purposes. You should never run your testing in a production database.

Postfix + GMail + Ubuntu 8.04 LTS

Finally, I was able to create a prototype mailer using Ubuntu and Postfix. The mailer will be used to send server status reports.

I've been working on this project since last year and I thought, maybe DilNET is blocking the ports that I need. After our Bayantel line was installed, Postfix can now deliver messages.

Here are the guides that I used to successfully create a simple postfix mailer.

The Prancing Tarantula - Guide to Getting Postfix to work on Ubuntu with Gmail by Mattox Beckman

His step-by-step instruction was clear and direct. If you just need to send a few automated emails using Gmail, this is a must-read.

Soup to Nuts - Gmail on Home Linux box using Postfix and Fetchmail by Mike Chirico

This is a more comprehensive guide for setting up a full blown mail server.

With these two guides, making your first email server will be a lot easier. Thanks Mattox and Mike!

How to find motherboard model in Ubuntu Linux

I've been very dependent on CPU-Z when I need to check the motherboard model of a PC. However, since I've been using Ubuntu lately, this is now a problem. I needed to get my motherboard model without opening my casing and voiding the warranty.

Here is the command to show the motherboard model in Ubuntu.

Ubuntu smbmount error

screenshot of smbmount error in Ubuntu
smbmount error in ubuntu
Sumakit ulo ko dito, saka ko na explain. Basta nagloko smbmount.

Sometimes, smbmount fails. Your mounted directory doesnt show up in file explorer but it shows up in terminal (through command ls -ltu). However, its permissions change to d?????????. Quite irritating.

The solution to this is to unmount it with command

sudo umount -l

That is small letter L, not number 1

What does -l mean? From man umount,

-l Lazy unmount. Detach the filesystem from the filesystem hierarchy now, and cleanup all references to the filesystem as soon as it is not busy anymore. (Requires kernel 2.4.11 or later.)

Laziness wins for now.
