By September 1 (Saturday), Banco de Oro (BDO-Unibank) will start charging their depositors 2 pesos for each withdrawal made. This is really going to cause an outrage among its depositor base. Will other banks follow suit? I hope this will not become the new trend in the banking industry.
Currently, BDO is charging 2 pesos for balance inquiries made on other banks' ATM and 11 pesos for withdrawals. Additionally, over-the-counter withdrawals for ATM-based accounts (passbook-less) are charged 100 pesos. Pretty hefty sum, if you ask me. With this kind of setup, it seems that you have two options: pay 2 pesos for ATM withdrawals or 100 pesos if over-the-counter. Depositors don't have much of a choice then; this is a very clear "lose-lose" situation for ATM account holders.
UPDATE:
BDO denied this claim and issued a statement to clarify the matter. Click here to read about it.

I have a BDO account and this is really bad news for me. Hilig ko pa naman mag check ng balance. Lets all go switch to BPI!!
That's one of the ill effects of charging depositors for a service that is supposed to be "free" in the first place, opening an account with another bank seems to be the top on the list.
